Best Public Golf Courses near Ithaca, NY

Near Ithaca, you'll find some of the best golf courses in the Finger Lakes region. We've described a few of our favorites below. Each of these courses is 18 holes, open to the public, and within 30 minutes of downtown Ithaca. For more information on golfing in our area, contact us at your convenience. (Note that, in the following paragraphs, "distance" refers to distance from downtown Ithaca.)

Hillendale Golf Course

  • Location: 218 Applegate Rd N, Ithaca, NY
  • Open: May through October
  • Distance: 7.0 miles

Located just minutes from downtown Ithaca, Hillendale Golf Course is one of the area's oldest courses, having originally opened in 1938. It's also one of Ithaca's most popular golf courses. Designers Mary Novickas and Darlene Sommer have created a challenging course that is appropriate for every skill level, with beautifully groomed bluegrass fairways and greens.

Hillendale Golf Course has excellent practice facilities, including a 350-year driving range, chipping area, bunker, and 2,500 square foot putting green. Course length is 6,004 yards, par is 70, slope is 115, rating is 68.8.

Trumansburg Golf Course

  • Location: 23 Halsey St, Trumansburg, NY
  • Open: March through October
  • Distance: 12.0 miles

Trumansburg Golf Course, located in Trumansburg, New York is considered one of the best courses in the Finger Lake area. It features beautiful views of the surrounding farmlands and forests. Built in 1969 by Bob Tallman, the course has well-maintained bluegrass fairways, large bent grass greens, and a few well-placed sand traps.

Besides the 18-hole course, facilities include a driving range and putting green. Course length is 6,308 yards, par is 72, slope is 122, and rating is 70.6.

Stonehedges Golf Course

  • Location: 549 Stevens Rd, Groton, NY
  • Open: April through October
  • Distance: 16.4 miles

Stonehedges Golf Course is located in the countryside just a little southeast of Groton, New York. This is definitely a demanding course, with hilly areas, a number of water hazards, plenty of trees lining the fairways, and relatively small greens. Fairways are winter rye grass, and greens are bent grass.

For practice, Stonehedges Golf Club has a driving range, chipping area, and putting green. Rates at the club are some of the best in the Ithaca area, especially for walkers on weekdays.  Course length is 6,440 yards, par is 72, slope is 122, and rating is 71.7.


Walden Oaks Country Club

  • Location: 3369 Walden Oaks Blvd, Cortland, NY
  • Open: March through December
  • Distance: 21.6 miles

The golf course at Walden Oaks Country Club, located in Cortland, New York, was originally designed by Bill Galloway and has been open since 1993. This championship course is the site of a number of local and state golf events. The course features well-groomed bluegrass fairways and greens, with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.

Practice facilities at Walden Oaks Country Club include a driving range, chipping area, and putting green. Course length is 6,229 yards, par is 71, slope is 123, and rating is 70.0.

Fillmore Golf Club

  • Location: 1505 Toll Gate Hill Rd, Locke, NY
  • Open: April through October
  • Distance: 21.3 miles

Fillmore Golf Club, located in Locke, New York, features Bermuda grass fairways and fantastic views of Owasco Lake. The course was designed by Aldor Jones and has been a fixture in the Finger Lakes area since 1965. Practice facilities include a driving range. Course length is 5,523 yards, par is 71, slope is 123, and rating is 67.9.

Willowbrook Golf Club

  • Location: 3267 State Route 215, Cortland, NY
  • Open: N/A
  • Distance: 22.1 miles

Willowbrook Golf Club has one of the oldest golf courses in the Finger Lakes region. riiginally designed by Dick Timmerman, the course has been around since 1928. The Timmerman family still owns and operates the club, and they're more than happy to offer tips on how to play the course.

Practice facilities at Walden Oaks Country Club include a putting green, golf simulator, and indoor practice area. Overall, the Willowbrook Golf Club course is very well maintained, the views along the course are excellent, and the club's rates are very reasonable. Course length is 6,105 yards, par is 70, slope is 110, and rating is 66.0.
